Spectrum Society Udaipur is a not-for profit organisation that has been working since 2003 with the informal education system and health awareness in rural area.
The Society began by implementing various programmes to enrich formal and informal educational quality across the area. By 2005 however it became clear that working on a “project” mode was inadequate and it takes continuous effort over many decades for any deep-rooted change to happen. This can only be achieved by community awareness and participation. Thus the idea of setting up community mobile Institutes came into being.
Today, the Society with 1000+ volunteers has been working in various Districts of Rajasthan.
Community mobile Institutes work in collaboration with community and donors to engage with volunteers. The range of work involves efforts to facilitate creative approaches to teaching and learning through participation in experiential learning, workshops, seminars etc.
The Society has also set up demonstration to the local community, at prevailing costs and constraints with identifying initiatives in education, nutrition, healthcare and The Spectrum Society Udaipur as registered on 108/Udaipur/2003-04 under section 1958 of Societies Registration Act No.28, 1958.
The learnings from the several years of working on the ground were consolidated to form the organizing principles of the society. Transformation, universality to knowledge, improvement in prevailing curriculum etc. are the few principles developed through continuous endeavours of the society and community.
The mandate of the society is not limited to education. It includes other allied fields such as livelihoods, health and sustainability which contribute to human development as a whole. The Society’s purpose is to prepare volunteers and such education system which has holistic approach which can contribute to a just equitable and humane society.
Beyond academics community mobile Institutes also conduct different activities like:
1. Communication :
During the session the tutor uses variety of tools and practice exercises to ensure best outcome. This includes role plays, listening exercises, vocabulary building exercises, by connecting the program with day to day situations.

The English speaking class has helped the students to communicate more efficiently and confidently.

Mental health counselling
Our emotional health is just as important as our physical health. Be aware of what you are planting in your mind, body, and soul.
Mental health is one of the most ignored and less spoken about condition. It’s a taboo and it’s a stigma to speak about. 1/8 people go through mental health condition in India, they are well dressed but deep inside stressed. Mental health doesn’t mean extreme cases of bipolarity, here we are talking about cases such as depression, self harm, paranoia, personality disorders, etc. To emphasize on why it’s important to openly talk about mental health and why it’s not a taboo.
We organize psychological sessions in workshops and seminars on Mental Health to educate, bring awareness and advocate at community centres, agencies, local community groups.
Women Health, Sanitation and Hygiene Educational Program:
Spectrum Society conducts Women Health, Sanitation and Hygiene Educational Program ; an educational drive on sanitation & hygiene for the women and girl to educate and empower them on menstrual hygiene as it is one of the most important, yet neglected, health issues in the developing world. It is a subject, surrounded by silence and shame, that also restricts women’s access to normal activities and services.
Spectrum Society is working towards creating a culture that welcomes discussion and makes adequate education for girls which is of equal importance. Not having access to menstrual hygiene management products can keep girls home from school during their period each month so a period should never stop girls from going to school or enjoying their rights is our mission.
Outreach program
Spectrum Society conducts programs like English Speaking, Presentation skills, Skill Development Session, Board examination counselling session, Teachers training session, in the schools.
Through the outreach programs, we associate with the small scale organizations that work with Spectrum Society as a part of their Community and Social responsibility. We conduct various training programs that are empathy driven providing care to less privileged. There are a list of activities spread throughout the year that each organisation identifies and associates based on their vision and alignment. These engagement programs help to encourage organisation’s participation in our activities.
Teacher’s enrichment programmes
The idea of Teacher’s enrichment programmes evolved from long years of the Society's experience in teacher professional development. The basic idea is to improve quality of education and provide a better learning experience for children in rural areas through improving the capacities of teachers at multiple levels:
· Teachers’ perspective on education and the role of education in society,
· Content knowledge in different subjects
· Appropriate pedagogic approaches that work given the child’s context and developmental stage.
Faculty Focus brings unique perspectives on topics like these:
The goal is that such a centre will have participation from a large number of teachers residing close to the centre (2-3km radius) who regularly visit, utilize the resources available and participate in the activities at the centre. Over time this, along with other avenues of mobilizing teachers and multiple modes of engagements (like discussions, reading and sharing sessions, workshops etc), will enable professional development of teachers.
